The Smart Talk

Helping Families Set Online Safety Rules Together

Challenge

Closing the Digital Safety Gap

To help families discuss online safety, the National PTA launched The Smart Talk tool in partnership with Norton security software company in 2015. While that initial version offered a basic overview for children to use computers safely and securely, the National PTA recognized it could spur even more meaningful conversations with more families if the experience connected better with kids and their parents.

Solution

An Interactive Guide for Vital Conversations

The new version of The Smart Talk, which we launched in 2022, guides family conversations with tips for parents on how to start an open dialogue and prompts for questions about such topics as social media and identity protection. Throughout the journey, we introduced more joyful, supportive moments to keep the conversations comfortable.

“These updates speak to our ongoing quest to champion inclusivity, provide families with the resources they need to live their digital lives safely, and expand our reach to empower children to become responsible digital citizens.”

Impact

Helping Kids Live Safer Digital Lives

This rewarding journey enables parents to deepen their family discussions around technology, ultimately enabling kids to navigate the digital world more safely. When families reach an agreement on the answers to the questions, The Smart Talk generates a customized agreement —a set of living guidelines for each child. By making the experience more interactive (and including Spanish translation by native speakers), the latest version of The Smart Talk serves its widest audience yet, making the internet that much safer.
